What is earwax?

Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It serves several important functions, such as trapping dust, debris, and preventing foreign objects from entering the ear, while also lubricating and protecting the delicate ear canal skin. Earwax is a waxy, sticky material that can vary in colour from light yellow to dark brown. Normally, the ear canals are self-cleaning, pushing excess earwax out of the ear. However, in some cases, earwax can accumulate and lead to discomfort or impaired hearing. It can be safely removed by a healthcare professional, but attempts to clean it with cotton swabs or other objects can push it deeper and potentially cause damage.

What is aural micro suction earwax removal?

Micro suction ear wax removal is a safe and precise procedure used to remove excess ear wax from the ear canal. Conducted by trained professionals such as audiologists or ENT specialists, it involves using a small, low-pressure suction device to extract the wax. Unlike other methods, microsuction doesn't require water irrigation, making it suitable for individuals with perforated eardrums or ear conditions. The process offers a clear view through a microscope or magnifying lens, ensuring controlled and targeted removal without discomfort. Its precision and effectiveness make it a preferred method for safely eliminating stubborn or impacted ear wax, promoting better hearing and ear health.

Is aural micro suction painful?

Typically, microsuction is not painful, although some people might feel slight discomfort or pressure during the procedure.

How long does an aural micro suction appointment take?

The duration can vary depending on the amount of wax and the individual's condition, but it often takes around 15 to 30 minutes.

What happens in an earwax removal appointment?

Initially, I'll ensure your completion of the medical history form, acknowledgment of the procedure details, and signing of the consent form.

Following this, I'll inspect your ears with an otoscope and then set up a video otoscope. This tool allows you to view and enables me to capture images of your ear canals for your records.

Based on the assessment, I will recommend the best approach. If micro suction is deemed suitable, I will proceed with the wax removal.

Afterward, using the video otoscope, I'll share visuals of your ear canals and provide guidance on post-procedure care and maintaining ear health.

Are there any risks associated with aural micro suction?

Micro suction for ear wax removal is generally safe. However, minimal risks like minor discomfort or rare instances of irritation exist. In inexperienced hands or with certain ear conditions, there might be a slight risk of injury, emphasizing the importance of professional expertise for this procedure.

How do I prepare for a earwax removal appointment?

Use olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops daily for 3-4 days preceding your appointment. If you wear hearing aids, apply the drops once nightly after removing them, gently wiping any excess before reinserting the aids the next morning. Administer 1-3 drops or spray into each ear, lying on one side for at least 5 minutes before switching sides. No need to warm the oil or use cotton wool.

Expect a temporary ‘blocked’ sensation, reduced hearing, or slight discomfort as olive oil-based drops may expand ear wax. Sodium bicarbonate drops might cause similar effects, typically to a lesser degree.

During this period, avoid using cotton swabs or any objects that might push wax deeper into the ear canal. Also, refrain from any excessive cleaning attempts. Prioritise gentle outer ear cleaning with mild soap and water.

Always review the instructions before using ear drops and avoid them if you have a perforated eardrum.

Is aural micro suction suitable for everyone?

While it's safe for many individuals, those with certain ear conditions or specific medical histories might not be suitable candidates. A consultation with a professional is advised.

Can children have aural micro suction?

Individuals aged 16 and older may undergo earwax removal as long as they can maintain stillness during the procedure. However, those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to their appointment for proper supervision. For Children 12 and younger please see your GP for a referral to the Ear, Nose and Throat department or seek treatment from a private wax removal specialist that has paediatric experience.

How should I prepare for an micro suction appointment?

Usually, there's no specific preparation required. However, it might be helpful to put a couple of drops of olive oil or over-the-counter ear drops into the affected ear a few days before the appointment to soften the wax.

Can I do micro suction at home?

Microsuction requires specialised equipment and training, so it's not recommended to attempt it at home. Improper techniques could cause damage to the ear.

How often should I get my ears cleaned?

The frequency of ear wax removal varies for each person. Some might require it more frequently than others. It's best to follow the advice of the professional performing the procedure.

What happens if it is not possible to remove all the earwax?

A follow-up appointment, at no extra cost, will be scheduled if wax removal isn’t achieved during the initial appointment. However, if a third session is required, it will be billed at the full rate.

After treatment, a minor residue of wax might persist in your ear canal. This residue is necessary to maintain the health of the ear canal.

What if there is no earwax to clear?

Despite experiencing symptoms of an ear wax blockage, earwax may not be the causing factor. In such instances, a £20 fee will apply to cover the appointment time, and you'll receive guidance on what to do next.

Remember, if you're considering microsuction or have concerns about your ears, consulting with a healthcare professional or an audiologist is the best approach to ensure proper care.
